George Heston Long Wharf Nature Preserve Walk

The first annual George Heston Long Wharf Nature Preserve Walk took place on June 30. As we walked, Chris Oyzak talked about the history of Long Wharf, all created by fill, and plans he hopes will be implemented to turn it into a better park, eliminating the through road along Long Wharf and creating a berm all along I-95 to separate it from the highway. When we reached the Nature Preserve at the west end of Long Wharf, David Rhere, Preserve Manager, spoke of his work maintaining the Preserve and eliminating invasive plants (especially phragmites), and of George Heston’s significant contributions to these efforts. As the accompanying photos suggest, it was a delight to be in a beautiful, peaceful, natural setting on a lovely day, sheltered from the sights and even the sounds of the highway and City.
