In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that our friend and fellow member, Linda Hegel, died on Sunday night. Linda was a member of our Club for forty-two years (since 1969) and served as president from 1979 until 1981. She was an active gardener, the moving force behind the community gardens at Edgerton Park, committed to the beautification of our city, and a willing and extremely knowledgeable mentor for many of us. She was a worthy recipient of the Waterman Bowl in 1983. Linda extended her reach beyond New Haven, however, and went on to serve as president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. Their appreciation of her considerable efforts and talents led to her appointment as an Honorary Board Member of the Federated Garden Clubs. What a wonderful tribute!
Linda loved the Garden Club. Even in these last few years when her health was declining, she made it a point to come to meetings, and often she remarked to me with pleasure about our Club's high level of interest and involvement and about all that she, personally, continued to learn about gardening and conservation.
