General Meeting

The meeting convened at 12:15


Deborah Moore introduced Christine Cooke, a member of the Assn. of Landscape Designs who specializes on Moss Garden Design which she refers to as “Moss-aics”. She showed slides identifying many moss species and parts of a number of moss gardens including Bartholomew’s Cobble in Sheffield, MA; Opus 40 in Saugerties, NY; and the Japanese Moss Stroll Gardens in No. Salem, NY.


BUSINESS SECTION OF THE MEETING – called to order at 1:35 p.m.


February meeting minutes were approved with changes.


Treasurer Katharine Goodbody’s financial report showed a total of $2,474.12 income and total assets of $102,796.63


President Susan Ehrenkranz thanked Lisa Lovejoy for the very successful Floral Challenge she held before the meeting. Results were exhibited on the side of the room.


The Hospitality closet is being emptied in anticipation of our change of venue next year and items displayed on the side table were “up for grabs”.


Two guests attended meeting, brought by Martha Alexander and Ruth Martin.


It was Anna Deming’s 90th birthday and best wishes were offered.


Billie Ladd’s husband, David, had surgery the previous Friday, and we wish him well.


Susan received a letter from the Federated Flower Show congratulating our club on Betsy Hartmayer winning an Honorable Mention in the Section B – TV Dinner, Class 4, I Love Lucy exhibit of a romantic dinner for two staged on a 36” diameter, 29” high table skirted in white, exhibiter to supply overlay; plus Vicki Arkins, Lisa Lovejoy and Betsy together winning 2nd place with their entry, Section E - Bopper Bob’s Diner (club competition), Class 13 “Burger, Fries and a Milkshake” – a vignette staged in one-fourth of an 8’ circle with 4’ wide and 8’ high solid black walls.


Another honor came to the club with Vicki and Lisa taking first place in last Friday’s Greenwich Garden Club Green Fingers show, “The Nature of the Game” Class 5 – “Puzzling” – A design staged on a black platform 15” high, 24” wide, 23” deep. Design may not exceed platform dimensions. Viewed from the top. Huge applause for both.


The board voted to use part of the surplus money from the Zone II meeting to establish a Club Founders Fund. This fund, which will be overseen by the Civic and Scholarship Committees, will be distributed at the discretion of the board. The Founders Fund Committee will bring names of area organizations and associations to the board, Garden Club of New Haven Committees are also able to apply. The Board, in turn, will choose three; those names will be brought to the general membership and the organization with the most votes will receive at least $1,000. Going forward, this fund will be supported by funds raised by Ways and Means.


Susan also announced that $1,500 of the Zone II profit monies have been set aside for the first meeting of the year which will be a lunch at the Lawn Club in celebration of our club and its members.


COMMITTEES


Phelps Triangle

Cordalie Benoit reminded us the upcoming work dates at Phelps Triangle are Saturday, April 14 and Monday, April 16.


Civic Projects

Debbie Edwards announced that the CT Legislatures will vote next week on whether to label genetically modified foods. You can email or call your local legislator to register your feelings on the topic.


Jeanne Bjorkman reminded everyone that today is the last day to sign up for the trip to see the Hartford CRRA (recycling center) and have lunch at the acclaimed Firebox Restaurant on March 14. Participants will carpool going up. The day will run from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. approximately, and tickets are $35 with lunch; $4 without.


Flower Arranging

Lisa Lovejoy gave thanks to who all came out for this morning’s Design Challenge.


The K2 workshop on Leaf Manipulation is April 3rd from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Carriage House. You must sign up by April 14th to come -- there’s a limit of 20 people --and tickets are $55.


There will be an Underwater Design workshop led by Vicki Arkins on April 18th from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Ag Station. Sign-Up sheets for it were at the back.


Hospitality

Sondra Haller thanked Joan Gordon, Robin DuBois, Lucy Elliot, Lucy Ambach, Susan Ehrenkranz, Amy Estabrook and Vickie DiSesa their help with lunch and Joan Nast for the sunny flower arrangement for the table. This prompted Susan to remind us that next year, in an effort to be greener, it will be BYO mug at lunch.


Nominating

Susan thanked Nancy Ahlstrom and her team for successfully filling all posts and also thanked all who accepted them.


Program

Debby Moore announced that April’s speaker will be different from that listed in the Directory. Miriam Landsman from Greenwich will come to talk about Floral Table Design and the resulting arrangements can be taken home at the end of the meeting.


Susan announced that the May General Meeting will actually take place the last week of April which means we will be having two general meetings in April.


Newsletter

Ann Hoefer is going on vacation and needs all news by the morning of Friday, March 9.


Dues letters will go out in the beginning of April and a quick response is hoped for.


We have a very busy March and April ahead.


The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 p.m.
