American Elms in New Haven: on its Green and in its Neighborhoods
There are many, many thanks to go around this spring! The 2013 Tree Project Committee heartily thanks those who helped pot 267 Jefferson American elms in April: Debby Moore, Jennifer Rook, Susan Ehrenkranz, Billie Ladd, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, Natalie Ronai, Vicki Arkins, Louise Carter, Isabel Caride, Rosita Murphy, Judi Freudenburg, Bonnie Byers and Cordalie Benoit. Jennifer's two daughters pitched in, too. We had great fun, and all of the seedlings are now placed in foster homes.
Special thanks to each of you who took seedlings into foster care. Forty-two members are keeping seedlings, and most of you have more than one -- wow!!! Other friends in the community who are taking care of seedlings are the Marsh Botanical Garden at Yale, Sandy Anagnostakis, Sharon Huttner, Patti Youngberg, and Dottie Cavanaugh.
We are happy to report that a number of schools have taken seedlings into foster care. This is an extraordinary opportunity for faculty and students to make the elm part a of their curricula for the next 3 years. Those schools who have joined in the project are Common Ground High School, Hamden Hall Country Day School, Hopkins School, Foote School, Cheshire Academy, and the Sound School. There is a possibility that a few others will volunteer, as well. We'll keep you posted.
The Urban Resources Initiative has volunteered to help us do GPS mapping of the locations of all of our trees in 2013 when they are placed in permanent homes.
Other community partners will join us as we continue working on each component of the project. And, talks are underway to secure the remaining funds required to meet our budgetary projections. We'll keep you posted about this, too!
Many thanks to Sandy Taylor and Sandy Anagnostakis for their inspiring talks at the May general meeting. We are grateful to Mikey Hirschoff, too, for producing a wonderful slide show documenting the Club's involvement on the Green, and to Amy Estabrook for her wonderful photographs of the Green. It was a proud day for us all to celebrate past accomplishments and future possibilities.
And finally, Karyl Evans has begun work on the documentary, as she filmed the Powder House Key ceremony on the Green in April.
Enjoy your foster-parenting responsibilities!
