Sondra Haller has been Associate Master of Jonathan Edwards College at Yale for ten years. A former teacher of almost every age group, she views her responsibilities in residence with Yale students as a continuation of her teaching career.
Sondra has always gardened, beginning in her home state of Nebraska. She says that she is still not used to the rocks here! She actively participates in the American Horticultural Society Seed Exchange, trying out new seeds in special beds, and reporting results as requested. She is also an active member of the Long Wharf Nature Preserve.
During the past three summers, Sondra has been working to get the garden at her New Haven home (which she and her husband have kept) back to what it was. She says it is her “therapy to pull weeds.” The property has a small pond, and brick paths and retaining walls built by Sondra. She changes her plantings from time to time, and plants just about everything. Container gardening helps her easily move plants to the sun, in order to cope with a lot of shade on the property, and has allowed her to always have gardens at JE.
