What is a Rain Garden? I became curious about them after reading an article in "House and Garden" magazine. Simply put, a rain garden is a "depression (about 6 inches deep) that collects runoff from a roof, driveway, or yard and allows it to infiltrate into the ground. Rain gardens are typically planted with shrubs or perennials, and can be colorful, landscaped areas in your yard that will also provide important environmental benefits."
Our speaker will be Karen Filchak with UCONN's Department of Extension in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Karen is an Extension Educator and is currently involved in several regional New England projects targeting homeowner landscape management practices with a focus on lawns. These projects are integrating behavioral science research in an effort to identfy the best methods and mechanisms to provide information to homeowners which will result in the greatest rate of adoption of recommendedpractices. Rain Gardens are one such homeowner landscape practice that can favorably impact water quality. Please join us on Monday, February 11th for this interesting program.
