Letter from the President, October

Dear Garden Club of New Haven member,

No spring, nor summer beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one autumnal face;
- John Donne

Fall is here and with that the beginning of another fabulous year with the Garden Club of New Haven. The October program on dahlias by Marge Schnerr was just the start of an exciting year planned by Lisa Lovejoy and her program committee. New this year will be an opportunity for each member to get involved in each meeting. The “Fresh Cup” arrangements at the October meeting were fabulous; many thanks to everyone who brought their “Fresh Cup” to the meeting. It was such fun to see all of the different arrangements and horticultural displays members did with their cups. Celebrating Thanksgiving and the bountiful harvest of November, next month members are asked to make a “Fresh Cup” including fruits and vegetables. We look forward to sharing the creativity of our members.

So many thanks to the Phelps Triangle Renovation Committee. This committee, chaired by Isabel Caride, has worked throughout the past year to renew Phelps Triangle while keeping with the original footprint and purpose for the park. Many thanks to Isabel Caride, Debby Moore, Karen Downer-Doyle, Barclay Smith, Louise Carter and Cordalie Benoit for their extraordinary efforts to renew Phelps Triangle and bring it back to a park that we, as the Garden Club of New Haven, are so very proud of. We also thank Hortie Wilson and Anna Glen Vietor for their generous gift to the Garden Club of New Haven that allowed us to undertake this project.

Debbie and I hope that you are all enjoying the photos in the Directory as much as I. Our thanks to Amy Estabrook and Susan Ehrenkranz for their work in putting this together and formatting the photos so perfectly.

Debbie and I hope that each of you have signed up for a committee(s). If not, please check names of the committee chair that are listed in the front of the Directory. If we are going to be an active, vibrant club we all need to participate at the committee level. I know personally that I so enjoyed the Phelps Triangle Committee and through our time spent together have formed a lasting bond with these women. And isn’t that why we join clubs?

We hope you are enjoying this glorious fall look forward to seeing you at the November meeting (with your “Fresh Cup”).

My best,
Billie
