Presidents letter- March

Dear Members,

Thanks to Mother Nature's unpredictable whims, March's general meeting was blown all over the place! And, thanks to the creative thinking and determination of many individuals, we were able to reschedule. Those of us who could accomodate our schedules enjoyed a beautiful flower show presented by Designing Women, an informative and thought-provoking conservation program presented by our own Zone II members, Carol Stoddard and Martha Phillips, and the good cheer and fellowship of spending time together.

At this most alluring and hectic time of the year, it becomes increasingly clear to us that our garden club schedule is in full gear and that we need to pause and make the time to communicate our activities more fully. We are especially grateful for the competent work of so many committees and for the spring events that they are planning, so please mark your calender in bright red ink so that you will not miss a single chance to learn, contribute and enjoy!

Events currently on the calendar follow, with the organizer's names in parentheses:

March 20 -- Jewelry workshop with Jane Vanderzee (Vicki Arkins)
March 23 -- Meeting with Common Ground on Shakespeare Garden (Debbie Edwards)
April 1 -- Kathryn Kennedy Lecture (Jody Bush)
April 2 -- Board Meeting
April 6 -- General Meeting (Bring your arrangement in your "lucky" container)
April 27 -- Local Growing and Eating lecture with Bill Duesing (Mikey Hirschoff)
May 1 thru 3 -- GCA Annual Meeting in Providence, hosted by Zone II
May 7 -- Board Meeting
May 8 -- Flower show and fund raising cocktail party at Louise Carter's (Betsy Hartmayer)
May 11 -- General Meeting
June 1 -- Annual Meeting at Martha Alexander's

Details about the special events on the calendar are included in this edition of the newsletter. In addition to these dates, we have ongoing Kitchen 1 and 2 workshops, work at Fellowship Place, and many other committee activities. We know that the Visiting Gardens Committee is planning an event or two for the spring, and we'll be hearing more from the Street Trees Committee about Greenskills, an important initiative underway in New Haven.

As we take deep breaths in preparation for what's ahead, Billie and I trust that you will find an opportunity for personal growth or to contribute to our community over the coming months. We're sure to see you at a garden club activity soon!

All the best,
Debbie

From Patterns by Amy Lowell
I walk down the garden paths,
And all the daffodils
Are blowing, and the bright blue squills.
I walk down the patterned garden-paths
In my stiff, brocaded gown.
With my powdered hair and jewelled fan,
I too am a rare
Pattern. As I wander downThe garden paths.
