GCA Minute

Our 2009 Annual Report to GCA follows. Hope you recognize some of your work in it!
Outstanding committee work, individual contributions, wonderful creativity, and dedication to the purpose of our organization resulted in another successful year.
Highlights included community work with Fellowship Place, a nonprofit organization focused on helping adults with mental illness; partnering with Common Ground High School, the first charter school founded to study the urban environment; supporting the children̢۪s rooftop garden at the CT Science Center; supporting Greenskills, a program which employs high school students who plant street trees; making Christmas arrangements for area nursing homes; planting at Yale-New Haven Children̢۪s Hospital; completing a major renovation of Phelps Triangle park; and maintaining trees on the New Haven Green.

Two open conservation events were held. Kathryn Kennedy of the Center for Plant Conservation spoke about vanishing flora, and Bill Duesing of the CT Northeast Organic Farmers Association spoke about soil and local eating.  A program favorite was Antonia Adezio, President of the Garden Conservancy. Members took a trip to neighboring Litchfield County to visit three stunning gardens. Numerous flower arranging workshops were held, plus Jane Vanderzee led a botanical-jewelry workshop. Horticulture challenges were issued all year, culminating in growing tomatoes that will be featured at a late summer party. Documentation of Roxana Laughlin’s garden continued.

Members worked to prepare for the annual meeting in Providence. The second delightful fund-raising gala for the 2011 zone meeting was held. And, seven new provisional members will join us next year.
The year will close with a festive celebration of our 85th anniversary, when we will revel in the past and present!
