As stated in our bylaws, "The purpose of this corporation shall be to create interest in and promote knowledge of gardening, preservation of natural resources, and civic horticultural work in the Greater New Haven area."
To that end, the Civic Committee is proud to announce two new projects for the spring. First, it will work with the members of Fellowship Place to teach them how to plant and care for the container gardens at their facility. Kathie Lundgren will lead this worthwhile endeavor. Also at Fellowship Place, several flower arranging workshops will be held for the members, and they will be ably led by Bonnie Byers.
The second project is with Common Ground School, the first charter school in the U.S. focused on the urban environment. The committee will help the students design and plant a Shakespeare garden on their campus. This work will complement the program called "Shakespeare's Natural World" which has both theatrical and horticultural components. The Elm Shakespeare Company will work with the students to create performances which will showcase the garden. It will be a pleasure to participate in this creative approach to learning, which combines challenging academic materials with opportunities for active learning with a rich grounding in the local, natural environment.
If you have an interest in participating in either of these exciting new projects, please contact Amy Estabrook.
