Letter From the Presidents- February

Dear Members,

If your family and friends ask you about what the garden club is doing these days, you will not have a short answer! You can proudly share the good news about several new civic projects and conservation events involving our community.

The Civic Committee announced last month that it will begin working with Fellowship Place members in two ways: by conducting several flower arranging workshops and by teaching them how to plant and care for the container gardens at their facility. The committee will also work with the students at Common Ground School to help them plan and plant a Shakespeare garden on their campus. This is part of a project involving the Elm Shakespeare Company and is a wonderful opportunity for garden club members to work with the students at Common Ground once again.

The Conservation Committee is involved in planning two informative speaking programs during April, which will be free and open to the public. One of them is a talk featuring Bill Duesing of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association. Mr. Duesing's topic is soil, and we're told that he can actually make soil fun! The other program is in conjunction with the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and features Dr. Kathryn Kennedy, the President and Executive Director of the Center for Plant Conservation in St. Louis. This event was made possible by Jody Bush's generosity and involvement, and we thank her.

Billie and I encourage you to support our many talented members who will be exhibiting in the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show this month. And, we know you join us in counting down the days until spring. Looking forward to seeing you at garden club!

All the best,
Debbie

In the swan light,
In the white-on-white light
Of a winter storm,
My delight and your delight
Kept each other warm.
